FAQ

Common Questions Before You Call

Every 6-12 months for standard refrigerators, every 3-6 months if you have pets shedding hair. Dirty coils make the compressor work harder, increase electricity use 10-15%, and shorten the unit's lifespan by 2-3 years. A vacuum + soft brush takes 20 minutes.
Refrigerators: 12-15 years (Sub-Zero, Miele: 20+). Dishwashers: 8-10 years. Washers and dryers: 10-13 years. Ovens and ranges: 13-15 years. Wine coolers: 8-12 years. Premium brands (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, Thermador) typically last 50-70% longer than mid-tier brands due to better sealed systems and serviceable components.
The 50% rule: if repair cost exceeds 50% of replacement cost AND the appliance is past 70% of its expected lifespan, replace. Otherwise repair. For premium brands (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele) the threshold is closer to 70% because replacement is $8,000-$14,000. A $1,000 Sub-Zero repair at year 15 is almost always worth it.
DIY safe: cleaning condenser coils, replacing water filters, leveling, simple drain hose unclogging, replacing door gaskets on washers/dryers. Call professional: anything involving sealed-system refrigerant (R-134a, R-600a), gas connections, electrical control boards, sealed motor replacement, anything under warranty. EPA Section 608 certification is legally required for refrigerant work in California.
Standard repairs: $200-$400 total ($80 diagnostic + parts + labor). Mid-complexity (control board, pump motor, igniter): $300-$600. Premium brand repairs (Sub-Zero, Wolf, Miele, Thermador): $600-$1,500 due to part costs and specialized training requirements. Sealed system refrigerant work: $700-$1,200. We provide written estimate before any work begins.
