WHAT WE FIX

Common Whirlpool Problems We Fix

Whirlpool appliances fail in patterns we have seen before. Knowing which part gives out first on your series shortens the diagnostic, and it keeps you from paying for a guess.

Cabrio UL Imbalance and Bearing Wear

Cabrio washers (WTW7600, WTW8500, WTW8800) are famous for the UL code at year 5-8. The little actuator gear under the basket wears out first, and since it is one of the most common Whirlpool failures it is usually on hand, so a UL call often finishes in one visit. If the tub bearing is going too, that is where we stop: we do not repair drum bearings, and we will tell you the washer has reached replacement instead of selling you a teardown.

Whirlpool Duet F21 Drain Pump Failure

F21 on a Duet front-loader means the water isn't leaving. The cause is almost always something IN the pump - coins, hair clips, a tiny sock - and less often the pump itself. We open the lower panel, clear the impeller, and only replace the pump when it tests bad. Most F21 calls need no part at all, so when the calendar has an opening today we take it, anywhere in the 22 cities we cover.

F5E2 Door Lock and F7E1 Motor Speed Sensor

F5E2 means the lid lock isn't latching - a 15-minute part swap. F7E1 means the motor speed sensor lost track of the rotor - we test the sensor and the wiring before deciding which one failed. Neither code is as bad as it looks on the display.

Whirlpool Dryer No-Heat: Thermal Fuse and Vent

A Whirlpool dryer that spins but won't heat almost always blew its thermal fuse - and the fuse blew for a reason: lint, a crushed hose, or a marathon vent run. We replace the fuse, check the heating side, and inspect the whole vent path. A new fuse on a blocked vent dies within weeks, so we never skip that step.

Dishwasher Clean Light Blinking 7 Times (F8E1 Family)

The 7-blink clean light (F8E1 on newer panels) means the dishwasher isn't getting enough water. Usually the inlet valve is stuck closed; sometimes the float under the tub is jammed by debris. We test the valve with a multimeter before replacing anything - it's a 10-minute diagnosis that prevents a parts-cannon repair.

Ice Maker: Ejector Module and Inlet Valve

When a Whirlpool fridge (WRS, WRF) stops making ice, it's the ejector module 7 times out of 10 - you can often hear the motor straining. Most of the rest is the water inlet valve. Both are among the parts that fail most often, so they're usually on hand. We put a meter on the valve before touching either one, because swapping both on spec costs more than finding out which failed.

LOCAL EXPERTISE

Why Whirlpool Brand Expertise Matters

Whirlpool sits in more Bay Area kitchens and laundry rooms than any other brand, and it is the one we get called out to most. That repetition is the whole advantage: we have had these machines apart often enough to know what usually goes first. A Cabrio that shakes and throws UL is the actuator gear far more often than not, and it is a part we keep, so the diagnostic is short and you are not paying us to work out what we already know.

Read full

Whirlpool builds for service: fewer proprietary parts, standard fasteners, panels that come off without a fight. A Whirlpool dishwasher inlet valve swaps in about 20 minutes with the machine pulled forward a few inches, where the same job on a Bosch means a full pull-out and taking a side panel off. Cheaper parts and shorter jobs are most of why a Whirlpool is the least expensive major brand to keep.

Whirlpool parts are easy to source across the Bay Area, so common items are usually on hand and anything we order arrives in a few days. That keeps repair worth it well into a second decade of use: fixing a 9-year-old Cabrio buys several more years for a fraction of a new machine plus delivery and haul-away. We put our repair price in writing at the visit, and the comparison is yours to make.

Whirlpool FAQ

Quick Answers About Whirlpool Repair

Whirlpool builds the everyday, high-use refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers and ranges in half the homes around here, and FixitBay LLC repairs all of them across San Francisco, the Peninsula and Marin. These are workhorse machines, so a repair often wraps on the first visit. Every call starts with an $80 diagnostic credited toward the repair and a written estimate before anything is ordered. We are a licensed California appliance technician (BHGS #51001), and the fix carries a 180-day warranty on parts and labor. Book same-day or next-day; the calendar shows the earliest open window.

No. Whirlpool sits at the affordable end of major-brand repair. Its parts are manufactured in volume, they cross over between model years, and several national distributors compete to sell them. A Whirlpool repair in a Bay Area home runs from $180 for parts and labor, depending on the appliance and the fault. A Sub-Zero refrigerator repair starts from $320 and a Wolf range from $280, because those parts are specialty items and the work takes longer. Whirlpool is the cheaper machine to keep running, and that is one reason we are called out to it more than any other. You approve a written estimate before work starts, the $80 diagnostic comes off it, and everything we fit carries a 180-day warranty on parts and labor.

A worn actuator gear, 9 times out of 10. The actuator sits under the basket, engaging it for spin and releasing it for agitation. Once the gear teeth round off the basket can no longer lock, the load swings out of balance on the spin ramp, and the control board raises UL. Replacing it takes about sixty to 90 minutes and sits at the lower end of Whirlpool washer pricing, which starts from $200. Before quoting we check that the machine is level and that the drum is not carrying one heavy bath mat, because both produce the same code and neither costs anything to correct. The other cause is a worn basket bearing. We do not repair those: the teardown costs more than the washer is worth, so a failed bearing means planning a replacement, and we tell you that instead of selling you the job.

Once a year at minimum, and every 6 months if the duct runs longer than 15 feet, turns through several elbows, or exits more than one floor below the machine. A choked vent is the single most common reason a Whirlpool dryer stops heating, and it is a genuine fire hazard. Lint collects in three places the filter never sees: the transition duct behind the dryer, the duct inside the wall, and the exterior flap, which can be painted shut or blocked by a bird nest. We inspect the whole path on every Whirlpool dryer call as standard, not as an upsell. Where a part has already been cooked by the restriction, a Whirlpool dryer repair runs from $180 for parts and labor, and the $80 diagnostic is credited toward it once you approve the estimate.

Possibly, and it is the cheapest thing to rule out. A Whirlpool refrigerator filter past its 6 month life restricts flow enough to starve the ice maker. Change it, wait a day, and see whether production resumes. That test costs about $50 and no service call. If nothing changes, the next suspects are the ejector module motor, which accounts for most of the remaining cases, and the dual water inlet valve solenoid. We put a meter on the valve coil before quoting either, because a dead solenoid and a seized ejector look identical from the kitchen. While the assembly is out we clear the fill tube, since a frozen tube ices up a new ice maker within weeks. A Whirlpool refrigerator repair runs from $220 for parts and labor, and the $80 diagnostic comes off it.

By category, in Bay Area homes: Whirlpool refrigerators run 12 to 18 years, ranges 14 to 18, gas dryers 12 to 16, washers 10 to 14, and dishwashers 9 to 12. Coastal exposure in San Francisco, Pacifica, and Sausalito pulls the lower end of every one of those bands, because salt air reaches the condenser and the sealed system first. Homes inland in San Rafael, Novato, and down the Peninsula reach the upper end. What decides the number is rarely dramatic: a drain pump, a door latch, a set of drum rollers. Replaced when they begin to complain they cost a fraction of what they cost after they have taken something else with them. At the diagnostic you get the age of your machine, what failed, and our repair price in writing, and the $80 diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you go ahead.

Repair, in most cases. Between 8 and 11 years a Whirlpool washer is worth fixing when the failure is mechanical, meaning an actuator, a drain pump, a lid lock, or a suspension, and when the diagnostic plus the repair lands under $400. Whirlpool washer service runs from $200, so most of those faults clear the bar. A new Whirlpool washer costs from $700 before delivery and haul away, which makes a $300 repair on a 9 year old Cabrio with several years left in it the straightforward call. The one exception is a failed basket bearing. We do not repair those, because the teardown costs more than the machine is worth, and when that is the diagnosis, we call it and skip the pitch for work that never pays back. You get the numbers at the visit and you decide.

Sometimes, and the diagnostic tells you which. Whirlpool is the brand we are called out to more than any other, so the parts that fail most often are the ones most likely to be on hand. When the part your machine needs is there, we finish the repair the same day, as soon as you approve the estimate. When it is not, we order it, and delivery usually takes 2-4 days. Then we come back and fit it, with no second diagnostic and nothing extra for the return trip. If Whirlpool has discontinued the part and offers no equivalent, you hear that upfront instead of watching us fit a near match that fails inside the year. You approve one written estimate before anything is ordered, and the price on it is the price you pay.

Yes. FixitBay LLC is a Licensed Major Appliance Technician under California License #51001, issued by the Bureau of Household Goods and Services and valid through July 31, 2027. We are independent technicians rather than a manufacturer service center, which means we work on your Whirlpool regardless of its age, its warranty status, or whether a service bulletin covers the fault. The license number is printed on your invoice next to the 180-day warranty on parts and labor, and the Bureau publishes a lookup if you want to verify it yourself. We carry insurance. Where a repair is not worth doing, you hear it up front, before any parts are ordered.

All of them. Cabrio and Cabrio Platinum, Duet, Duet HT and Duet Steam, Vantage, the WTW top loaders and WFW front loaders, WED electric and WGD gas dryers, WRF and WRS refrigerators, WDT and WDF dishwashers, and the WFE and WFG ranges. Both the older direct drive transmissions and the current variable speed drive systems, gas and electric, in every category. We also service Whirlpool commercial laundry, the coin operated and on premise machines found in apartment buildings across San Francisco, which runs from $300 for parts and labor. If your model plate shows a series that is not on this list, it is almost certainly a rebadge of one that is. Send the model number when you book and we will tell you before the technician leaves.

San Francisco, the northern Peninsula, and southern Marin. On the Peninsula side that means San Francisco, Daly City, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, Pacifica, Colma, Brisbane, and Montara. Across the bridge it means Sausalito, Mill Valley, San Rafael, Novato, Tiburon, and Corte Madera. West Marin, meaning Stinson Beach, Point Reyes, and the coast beyond, sits outside our service area, and we will not book a visit out there we cannot keep. There is no trip charge anywhere we do serve. Same day and next day appointments open across most of the area, and the booking calendar shows you the earliest window we have. The common Whirlpool parts are usually on hand, so a Whirlpool call often finishes on the first visit.
