WHAT WE FIX

Common Viking Cooktop Problems We Fix

Viking appliances fail in patterns we have seen before. Knowing which part gives out first on your series shortens the diagnostic, and it keeps you from paying for a guess.

Viking Cooktop Repair: Burner Clicks Without Lighting

The spark is there and the gas is not, or the gas is there and the spark is not. On a VGSU or VRT the first suspects are a burner cap sitting out of line after a wipe-down, a sooted spark electrode at that one position, and the spark module behind the panel. We check the caps and the electrode before any part is ordered.

Viking Cooktop Repair: Spark Module and Automatic Reignition

Viking surface burners relight themselves the moment a flame goes out. When every burner clicks at once, or none of them spark, the module or its power feed is the fault, and no burner cap will fix it. The module is a single part behind the control panel, and we test it before we replace it.

Viking Cooktop Repair: Burner Switch and Gas Valve

Front burners do most of the work, so their switches wear first. A burner that lights only some of the time, or keeps clicking after it is lit, points at the switch. Replacement takes about 45 minutes per position with the cooktop tilted forward. A gas valve failure is rarer and a longer job, and we tell you which one you have before any work starts.

Viking Cooktop Repair: Weak or Yellow Flame

Viking's own Use and Care manual lists the causes: burner ports are clogged, the unit is running on the wrong type of gas, or the air shutters are out of adjustment. We open the port, reset the shutter and read the supply pressure with a manometer. If the pressure is wrong upstream of the cooktop, you hear that instead of paying for burner parts.

Viking Induction Cooktop Repair: Dead Zone or No Power

VICU 5 Series, RVIC 3 Series and Virtuoso MVIC cooktops are electronic. One zone that stops heating, or a cooktop that will not switch on, points at the touch control, its wiring or the induction generator under the glass. We test each one before quoting, because a control board and a generator are very different repairs.

Viking Rangetop Repair: VRT 5 Series and 7 Series

A rangetop is a cooktop with range burners: 8,000 to 23,000 BTU on the 7 Series, with the griddle and the backlit knobs. The same parts fail in the same order as on a Professional range: spark electrodes, burner switches, the spark module. A 7 Series shows a fault by turning the knob backlight red; we read the fault at the visit.

SERIES AND MODELS

Viking Cooktop Series We Service

Model numbers from the rating plate under the control panel tell us which series of parts to order. These are the current lines on vikingrange.com and the older Professional models they replaced.

5 Series gas cooktops

VGSU5301, VGSU5361

30 and 36 inch sealed burner cooktops with automatic reignition. Spark electrodes, burner switches and the spark module are the usual repairs.

5 Series induction and electric

VICU5301, VICU5361, VECU5301, VECU5361

Electronic controls and generators under the glass. A dead zone or a dark control panel is tested at the control, the wiring and the generator.

3 Series

RVGC3301, RVGC3361, RVIC330, RVIC336, RVEC330, RVEC336

The 30 and 36 inch gas, induction and electric cooktops of the entry line. Same parts logic as the 5 Series.

Virtuoso induction

MVIC6301, MVIC6361, MVIDC636, MVIDC648

Including the Panorama downdraft cooktops. Control, generator and the downdraft blower are tested separately.

VRT rangetops, 5 and 7 Series

VRT5304, VRT5364, VRT5484, VRT736, VRT748

Range burners without the oven. The 7 Series adds the griddle and backlit knobs; a fault turns the backlight red.

Older Professional cooktops

VGSU, VGC

Still working in San Francisco and Marin kitchens. Genuine Viking parts are ordered against the serial number; discontinued parts are named up front.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU CALL

What to Check Before You Call

These quick checks save you a service call when the fix is something a homeowner can handle in 5 minutes.

1Lift the burner cap and seat it on its pins. A cap sitting out of line after a wipe-down is the most common no-spark call we get, and it costs nothing to check.
2Dry the burner after a boil-over. A wet spark electrode will not fire until it dries, and it dries on its own.
3If every burner clicks at once, stop there. That is the spark module or its power feed, and no cap will fix it.
4If you smell gas, do not light anything. Shut the cooktop valve, open a window, call PG&E from outside, then call us.
LOCAL EXPERTISE

Why Viking Brand Expertise Matters

Viking builds its cooktops for component-level service, and that shapes a repair visit. A burner switch replaces in about 45 minutes per position with the cooktop tilted forward, a spark module is one part behind the control panel, and most cooktop faults are mechanical and predictable rather than electronic. A Viking cooktop repair usually ends with the burner working on the same visit.

Genuine Viking parts are ordered against your model and serial number, and they take longer to reach us than mass market parts do. You get the date before we order, and the return visit carries no second diagnostic and no trip charge.

Across San Francisco, Marin and the Peninsula we see Viking cooktops most often in remodeled kitchens: a VGSU over a wall oven in a Noe Valley Victorian, a 48-inch VRT rangetop in a Pacific Heights or Mill Valley kitchen. We finish most cooktop repairs on the first visit; when a specialty part is needed you get the exact parts timeline in writing at the $80 diagnostic.

Viking Cooktop FAQ

Quick Answers About Viking Cooktop Repair

Yes. FixitBay LLC repairs Viking gas, induction and electric cooktops and VRT rangetops across San Francisco, the Peninsula and Marin County. The three faults we see most on a VGSU or VRT are a burner that clicks without lighting, a burner cap knocked out of line, and a spark electrode that has sooted over. We start with the checks that need no parts, re-seating the caps and testing the electrode at that one position. If the spark module has failed we replace it, and on a front burner that gets the most use a worn switch is the next suspect. A Viking cooktop repair for the spark, switch or electrode starts from $450. Every visit starts with the $80 diagnostic, credited to the repair once you approve the written quote, and parts and labor carry a 180-day warranty. FixitBay LLC holds California BHGS license #51001, and we book same-day or next-day in most cases.

Three causes cover most of these calls. The burner cap is sitting out of line after a wipe-down, so the spark jumps to the wrong place: lift the cap, seat it on the pins and try again before you book. The spark electrode at that position has sooted over, which we replace at that one burner. Or the spark module has failed, which shows as every burner clicking without a flame, or none of them sparking at all. A burner that lights only some of the time usually has a worn burner switch, and the front burners wear first because they do most of the work. We test in that order and quote in writing before any part is ordered. The cooktop repair starts from $450 with the $80 diagnostic credited.

A yellow flame means incomplete combustion, which deserves attention rather than alarm. Viking's own Use and Care manual lists the causes: burner ports are clogged, the unit is running on the wrong type of gas, or the air shutters are out of adjustment. We open the blocked port, reset the air shutter and read the supply pressure with a manometer instead of guessing from the flame color. A correct Viking flame is blue with a small inner cone; persistent yellow tipping deposits soot on cookware and wastes gas. If the pressure is the culprit, the problem sits upstream of the cooktop and we tell you that instead of selling you burner parts. When parts are needed, a gas cooktop repair runs from $450, and the $80 diagnostic is credited toward the work.

A Viking cooktop repair for the spark module, a burner switch or an electrode starts from $450 for parts and labor, and a rangetop or induction repair starts from the same figure. Every visit begins with the $80 diagnostic, credited toward the repair once you approve the written estimate; decline the estimate and the $80 is the only charge. Genuine Viking parts are ordered against your model and serial number, and you get the delivery date before we order. Nothing beyond the $80 is charged until you have the price in writing, and every repair carries a 180-day warranty on parts and labor.

All of the current lines and the older Professional models they replaced. Gas: the 5 Series VGSU cooktops in 30 and 36 inches, the 3 Series RVGC, and the VRT rangetops in the 5 Series and the 7 Series, with its 8,000 to 23,000 BTU burners, griddle and backlit knobs. Induction: the 5 Series VICU, the 3 Series RVIC and the Virtuoso MVIC, including the Panorama downdraft models. Electric: the 5 Series VECU and the 3 Series RVEC. We also service the earlier Professional VGSU and VGC cooktops still working in San Francisco and Marin kitchens. Bring the model number from the rating plate under the control panel when you book; it tells us which series of genuine Viking parts to order.

Viking gas cooktops run 16 to 22 years in residential use. The chassis is heavy-gauge steel, and the parts that wear, electrodes, switches and the spark module, are designed to be replaced one at a time. A repair from $450 on a 12-year-old VGSU returns years of use against the price of a new Viking cooktop plus the cutout work, and the same holds for a VRT rangetop or a VICU induction model, where the control and the generator are the parts with a finite life. The math changes when the valves, the switches and the module all want attention at once on a cooktop past 20 years, and that is when we say so instead of stacking repairs. You approve a written estimate first, and the $80 diagnostic comes off it.

Yes. Viking induction cooktops, the VICU 5 Series, the RVIC 3 Series and the Virtuoso MVIC, are electronic appliances: one zone that stops heating, a cooktop that will not switch on, or a control that no longer responds points at the touch control, its wiring or the induction generator under the glass. We test each one before quoting, because a control board and a generator are very different repairs. An induction repair starts from $450 with the $80 diagnostic credited, and parts and labor carry a 180-day warranty.
