WHAT WE FIX

Common Viking Range Problems We Fix

Viking appliances fail in patterns we have seen before. Knowing which part gives out first on your series shortens the diagnostic, and it keeps you from paying for a guess.

Viking Range Repair: Oven Igniter Glows but Will Not Light

The hot-surface igniter in a Professional range oven weakens around year 9 to 13. It still glows orange, but it no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve, so the safety circuit holds the gas back. That is the interlock doing its job. The swap takes 60 to 90 minutes on accessible Professional series, and we measure the current draw before we replace anything.

Viking Stove Repair: Burner Switch and Spark Module

A surface burner that clicks without lighting, lights only sometimes, or keeps sparking after it is lit has a worn burner switch or a failed spark module. Front burners go first because they do the most work, around year 7 to 10. A switch replaces in about 45 minutes per position with the cooktop tilted forward; the module is one part behind the panel.

Viking Range Repair: Oven Not Heating or Baking Unevenly

On a dual fuel range (VDR, VDSC, Tuscany) the oven is electric: a bake element, a temperature sensor or the oven control can stop the heat. On a gas range the igniter and the oven valve lead the list. Uneven baking on either points at the convection fan, which slows with age. We test the element, the sensor and the fan before anything is ordered.

Viking Range Repair: Door Hinges and Gasket

A Viking oven door is far heavier than a standard one, so the hinge springs fatigue and the door sits low and seals poorly around year 11 to 15. You notice a cavity that will not hold temperature, a self-clean cycle that refuses to lock, or a door that drops the last few inches. We replace the hinges in pairs, realign the door and confirm the lock engages before we leave.

Viking Range Repair: Weak or Yellow Flame

Viking's Use and Care manual lists the causes: burner ports clogged, the wrong type of gas, or air shutters out of adjustment. We open the port, reset the shutter and read the supply pressure with a manometer. We leak-check every gas joint we open and will not leave a range in service if a connection does not hold.

Viking 7 Series Range Repair: Red Knob Backlight

On the 7 Series (VGR7, VDR7 and the VRT7 rangetop) a fault turns the knob backlight red and flashes the griddle or oven knob rings a set number of times. Viking's manual publishes no table of these codes, so we read the flash count at the visit and test the part it points at. The code keeps working even when the night light is switched off.

SERIES AND MODELS

Viking Range Series We Service

Model numbers from the rating plate under the control panel tell us which series of parts to order. These are the current lines on vikingrange.com and the older Professional models they replaced.

Professional 5 Series

VGR5304 to VGR5604, VGIC5302 to VGIC5482, VDR5304 to VDR5604, VIR5304 to VIR5484, VER5304

Sealed burner gas, open burner gas, dual fuel, induction and electric, 30 to 60 inches. The largest Viking population in Bay Area kitchens.

Professional 7 Series

VGR7362, VGR7482, VDR7362, VDR7482

36 and 48 inch gas and dual fuel with 8,000 to 23,000 BTU burners, griddle and backlit knobs. A fault turns the knob backlight red.

Tuscany

TVDR361, TVDR481, TVDR661

36, 48 and 66 inch dual fuel ranges. Electric ovens, gas burners: both sides are tested on one visit.

3 Series

RVGR3302, RVDR3302, RVIR330, RVER3301

The 30 inch gas, dual fuel, induction and electric ranges of the entry line.

Older Professional ranges

VGSC, VDSC, VGCC

The self-clean Professional ranges from before the 5 Series. Still cooking in Victorian kitchens; genuine Viking parts are ordered against the serial number, and a discontinued part is named up front.

ERROR CODES

What a Viking Range Error Code Means

Viking publishes no code table in its Use and Care manuals, and we do not invent one. This is what the manuals say, and what to do with it.

Red knob backlight, 7 Series

The 7 Series manual: a fault turns the knob backlight red, and the griddle or oven knob rings flash a set number of times for each error code. The code still works with the night light switched off.

What to do: Note which knob flashes and how many times, turn the oven off, and tell us when you book. We read the count at the visit and test the part it points at before anything is ordered.

Code on the oven display, Professional dual fuel

The Professional dual fuel manual says the range can detect and report any internal errors, and that if you see an error code on the display you should call for service. No list of codes is printed.

What to do: Write the code down before you clear it. At the visit we read it, then test the sensor, the lock or the control it points at, and you approve a written estimate before any part is ordered.

No code at all, gas ranges and rangetops

A VGR, VGIC or VRT has no electronic display. The symptom is the message: clicking without a flame, a yellow flame, an oven that stays cold.

What to do: Describe the symptom when you book. The cards above say what each one usually means, and the $80 diagnostic settles it.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU CALL

What to Check Before You Call

These quick checks save you a service call when the fix is something a homeowner can handle in 5 minutes.

1Check the breaker and the plug first. A dual fuel oven needs power to heat, and even a gas range needs it for the igniters and the controls.
2Igniter glowing with no flame: stop cycling the burner. The safety circuit is holding the gas back on purpose until the igniter is replaced.
3Door sitting low, or a gap at the top of the door: that is the hinges, and they are replaced in pairs.
47 Series: note which knob ring flashes red and how many times before you turn the range off.
5If you smell gas, do not light anything. Shut the valve behind the range, open a window, call PG&E from outside, then call us.
LOCAL EXPERTISE

Why Viking Brand Expertise Matters

Viking stoves and ranges are engineered for component-level service, and that shapes how we repair them. Burner switches replace in 45 minutes per position with the cooktop tilted forward, igniters swap in 60 to 90 minutes on accessible Professional series, and most failures are mechanical and predictable rather than electronic. A Viking range repair visit usually ends with the burner working on the same visit.

Read full

Genuine Viking parts are ordered against your model and serial number, and they take longer to reach us than mass market parts do. You get the date before we order; if the part is on hand we fit it the day you approve the estimate, and the return visit carries no second diagnostic and no trip charge.

Across San Francisco, Marin and the Peninsula we see Viking Professional ranges most often in remodeled Victorians and Edwardians, and the 48-inch and 60-inch dual fuel models in Pacific Heights, Tiburon and Mill Valley kitchens. Old gas lines in pre-1920 houses run uneven pressure, so we read the supply with a manometer on every call before blaming the range.

Viking Range FAQ

Quick Answers About Viking Range Repair

Yes, and it is daily work for us. FixitBay LLC services Viking Professional 5 Series and 7 Series gas and dual fuel ranges, Tuscany, the 3 Series and the older VGSC, VDSC and VGCC models across San Francisco, Marin and the Peninsula: igniters that click without lighting, burners running a weak or yellow flame, ovens that never reach the set temperature, sagging doors, and controls that lose the bake signal. Viking builds to commercial patterns, which is why one range often outlives two kitchens. A Professional range repair runs from $450 for parts and labor, and a stove top fix, meaning a spark module, a burner switch or an electrode, starts at $450. We leak-check every gas joint we open and will not leave a range in service if a connection does not hold. You get the $80 diagnostic back against the repair, parts and labor carry a 180-day warranty, and we book same-day or next-day in most cases. FixitBay LLC holds California BHGS license #51001.

The igniter has weakened, not failed. A hot-surface igniter must draw enough current to satisfy the gas valve safety circuit. As the element ages its resistance climbs, the current falls below the threshold, and the valve refuses to open even though the igniter still glows orange. What you are watching is a safety interlock doing exactly its job. Do not keep cycling the burner, and do not leave gas running in the hope that it catches. Replacement is routine on a Viking Professional range and lands from $450 for parts and labor, covering the igniter, a valve check, and control verification. If the burner also runs yellow afterwards, the air shutter wants adjusting. The $80 diagnostic comes off the total, and the work carries a 180-day warranty.

Five faults account for most of our Viking range calls. The oven igniter weakens around year 9 to 13: it glows but no longer opens the gas valve. The front burner switches wear around year 7 to 10, so a burner lights only some of the time or clicks after it is lit. The spark module fails, which shows as every burner clicking without a flame. The door hinges sag around year 11 to 15, so the cavity loses heat and the self-clean cycle will not lock. And on dual fuel models the convection fan slows, which shows as uneven baking. A yellow flame is the sixth, and Viking's own manual lists its causes: clogged burner ports, the wrong type of gas, or air shutters out of adjustment. Each of these is a parts repair from $450, and the $80 diagnostic tells you which one you have before anything is ordered.

Every Viking range repair on this page starts from $450 for parts and labor: the oven igniter, valve or control, the stove top's spark module, burner switch or electrode, the dual fuel oven's element, sensor or convection fan, and the door hinges. Every visit begins with the $80 diagnostic, credited toward the repair once you approve the written estimate; decline it and the $80 is the only charge. Genuine Viking parts are ordered against your model and serial number, and you get the delivery date before we order. Nothing beyond the $80 is charged until you have the price in writing, and every repair carries a 180-day warranty on parts and labor.

Almost always yes, because replacement is not a like-for-like purchase. A comparable Viking Professional dual-fuel runs from $9,000 once you count the range, delivery, refitting the built-in cabinetry, and the gas work. An igniter and burner switch service on a 14-year-old Professional is a repair from $450 and typically returns 5 to 8 years of use. Viking engineers these ranges for 18 to 25 years, so 14 is middle age, not the end. The math changes when the control board, the valve assembly, and the igniters all want attention at once on a range past 22 years, and that is when we tell you instead of stacking repairs. You approve a written estimate first, and the $80 diagnostic comes off it.

18 to 25 years in residential use, because Viking borrowed its patterns from commercial kitchens: heavy-gauge steel, burners rated up to 23,000 BTU on the 7 Series, and parts designed to be replaced one at a time. What shortens that number is a door hinge nobody adjusts, because a sagging door lets heat cycle the control until it fails, and a burner left running yellow. At 14 a Professional range is middle age, not the end. Past 22, when the control, the valve assembly and the igniters all want attention at once, we tell you instead of stacking repairs. The 5 Series, 7 Series, Tuscany and 3 Series ranges sold today follow the same pattern as the older VGSC and VDSC models. One visit tells us where a specific range sits, and the $80 diagnostic is credited toward any repair you approve.

The current lines and the ones they replaced. Professional 5 Series: VGR sealed burner gas, VGIC open burner gas, VDR dual fuel, VIR induction and VER electric, in 30, 36, 48 and 60 inches. Professional 7 Series: VGR7 gas and VDR7 dual fuel in 36 and 48 inches, with the backlit knobs. Tuscany TVDR dual fuel in 36, 48 and 66 inches. 3 Series RVGR gas and RVDR dual fuel in 30 inches. And the older Professional VGSC, VDSC and VGCC ranges that still cook in San Francisco Victorians. Bring the model number from the rating plate under the control panel when you book; it tells us which series of genuine Viking parts to order.

No. Our Viking work is indoor cooking and refrigeration: ranges, rangetops, cooktops, wall ovens and built-in refrigerators. We have not serviced Viking outdoor grills, so we do not book them. For an indoor Viking range or stove, book the $80 diagnostic online or call.

Yes. Viking components are ordered against your model and serial number once the diagnostic has identified the fault, and delivery runs longer than the 2 to 4 days a mass market part takes. We give you the date when we know the part, not before. If the component happens to be on hand we fit it the day you approve the estimate, and the return visit carries no second diagnostic and no charge for the trip. Where a part has been discontinued with no equivalent, you hear it up front and we price the alternative.
